The 10 positions of the Celtic cross

The cross (cards 1 to 6) describes the situation: 1 Present, where you are now; 2 Challenge, what crosses your path; 3 Root, the foundation in the distant past; 4 Recent past, what is passing away; 5 Goal, what you are aiming for or the best possible outcome; 6 Near future, what comes next.

The staff (cards 7 to 10) is about you and your world: 7 You, your attitude; 8 Surroundings, the people and circumstances around you; 9 Hopes and fears; 10 Outcome, where things are heading if nothing changes.

How to read your cards

A tarot deck has 78 cards. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana, from The Fool to The World, stand for the big themes and turning points of life. The 56 cards of the Minor Arcana are about everyday matters and come in four suits: Wands (fire: energy and ambition), Cups (water: feelings and love), Swords (air: thoughts and conflict) and Pentacles (earth: money, work and home).

Read each card in its position first, then look at the story they tell together. Lots of Major Arcana cards means a big moment; lots of one suit tells you where the energy is. Browse every card in our tarot card meanings.

Questions about the Celtic cross

What is the Celtic cross tarot spread?

It is the best-known tarot spread, made popular by A. E. Waite in 1910. It uses 10 cards: six form a cross that describes the situation, and four form a staff about you, the people around you, your hopes and fears, and the outcome.

Is this Celtic cross reading free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no limit. You pick all 10 cards from a full 78-card deck shuffled with true random numbers.

When should I use the Celtic cross?

For one important question or a tangled situation. For a quick yes or no, one card is enough; for a general look, use three cards.

Can tarot predict the future?

There is no evidence that it can. Use the reading as a tool for reflection, to look at the situation from a new angle.
